Ginger: We grated 1 inch of ginger using the fine holes of each box grater and each rasp or zester to see how easily teeth cut through tough fibers.Contacting Farberware Customer Service Centerįarberware is a kitchen equipment and accessory company with a name for quality.Nutmeg: We grated one nutmeg berry on the fine holes of each box grater and each rasp or zester to see how easily teeth cut through the hard flesh of the berry. We also tested how well we were able to zest around the lemon’s curves. We looked for graters that produced zest fine enough to blend easily into a vinaigrette or lemon meringue pie and docked points from those that dug into the lemon’s bitter white pith. Lemon: We zested one lemon on the fine holes of each box grater, as well as with each rasp or zester.Again, we looked for undesirable crumbling, shearing, and messiness, as well as uniform shred size and shape. Pecorino: We shredded 1 ounce of Pecorino using the fine holes on each box grater, and using each rasp grater or zester. We also considered whether cheese flew off the face of the grater and made a mess. We paid attention to whether cheese passed through the grater easily, creating even shreds, or if it crumbled into uneven blobs or sheared (broke into larger chunks that are then harder to shred). Mozzarella: We shredded 4 ounces of mozzarella using the coarse holes on each box.Potatoes: We sliced half a potato on each box grater with a wide blade to see how consistent the pieces were.We looked for longer, even, and consistent shreds that would cook uniformly and hold up well in a slaw, carrot cake, or batch of latkes. Carrots: We shredded half a large carrot using the coarse holes of each box grater to see how quickly it grated hard vegetables. Some graters even come with a container that doubles as a guard, which protects blades when not in use. For all other styles of grater, we looked for models that came with attached containers to prevent shreds from flying everywhere. Self-contained: Taller box graters are best for containing shreds.Although we looked for dishwasher-safe graters, our experts recommended hand washing to prolong a grater’s sharpness. Easy to clean: It should be easy to wipe down graters to push out any remaining food bits, as well as to clean any baskets or attachments.Ideally, a handle also shouldn’t be slippery when wet. Comfortable: A grater’s handle should feel comfortable to grip and not be too unwieldy to hold onto for an extended period of time. ![]() Graters should also be solidly built, with metal sides that don’t bend under pressure from hard vegetables. A stable base on box graters or a non-slip edge for paddle and flat graters makes that easier. Sturdy: A good grater should sit firmly on a counter, cutting board, or plate to ensure safe grating. Some box graters also have wide blades on one side to create slices of hard vegetables like beets or potatoes. Coarse holes (which vary in width from grater to grater) are useful for shredding vegetables (like potatoes and carrots), as well as firm or soft cheeses (like cheddar and mozzarella) fine holes are good for thinner shavings from citrus zest, garlic, nutmeg, ginger, and hard cheeses (like Parmesan and Pecorino Romano). Versatile: We preferred graters that have multiple sides with different hole sizes.A sufficiently sharp zester will help remove just the right amount of citrus rind without ripping into the bitter pith. You shouldn’t meet a lot of resistance when shredding or slicing on a good grater, and the results should be consistent enough to cook evenly or look attractive as a garnish. Sharp: Graters should be able to efficiently cut through hard vegetables or soft cheeses. ![]()

![]() You can also call for aid from medics, heavy weapons guys who carry spare ammo of all types, engineers for repairs and backup in general. You can also pick up the troop kits of deceased ally and enemy troops which can be handy as you tend to burn through ammo quite quickly in the (seemingly endless) firefights. The various troop kits can also be changed before each re-spawn so if you are being overwhelmed by enemy tanks then re-spawning as an anti-tank or engineer (mines and explosive charges) may be good choices. Each troop kit has its own particular capabilities in addition to the weapons carried, for example the medic can heal wounds and the engineer lay mines or repair vehicles. The weapons load-outs are fairly generic for each troop type in vanilla BF2 but can be quite varied in the various mods. I preferred playing as one of the various infantrymen types or as a tank driver/gunner rather than trying to fly any type of aircraft alas I'm several hundred flying hours short of getting my pilot's license. That said, it is great FUN, though far from realistic for an infantryman, to jump on board and drive a tank and fire its main gun and MG or pilot a fighter plane. You select the battle (or map), adjust the difficulty, pick your side, usually Western forces of some kind (mainly US or NATO in most mods) or terrorists (of various kinds, usually the generic "middle eastern" variety), pick your weapon's load out (troop kit) and spawn point and away you go. There is no need to look deeper as that is all there is to the BF series games. Like the other Battlefield series titles, the "missions" in BF2 require you to attack enemy bases (flags) and defend friendly and captured bases (flags). The missions, while overwhelmingly generic, do offer a good variety of weapons and vehicles, vessels, and aircraft to try and maps to explore. BF2 missions are focused on capturing and/or defending objectives and have no single player character or narrative (apart from the usually extremely brief mission briefing screen which gives you the setting). My review of BF2/SF/EF/AF is based on a SP play through of all the official EA missions/maps as both sides against AI bots and indeed many of the maps/missions in the numerous mods. ![]() BF2 and its add-ons, official and otherwise, make BF2 a desert island FPS game as there is enough variety through its add-ons and mods to keep replaying. ![]() BF2, together with its SF/EF/AF add-ons, however is eminently enjoyable in its own right and even more so through the excellent mods available. While I vanilla BF1942 and BFV are reasonable games it is the third party mods that make these games truly enjoyable. My most recent BF series acquisitions are the oldest, BF1942, and the reasonably recent BF Bad Company 2, which is as yet unplayed. I came to the BF FPS series somewhat late after playing story-driven and/or mission-based FPS games like COD, MOH, Rainbow Six, and SOF2. Nowadays you get the Euro Force (EF), Armored Fury (AF) booster packs for free as part of the v1.5 patch. I own BF2 Deluxe Edition which comes with the Special Forces (SF) expansion. But the multitude of maps and terrain, the ability top play for either faction, the vast array of weapons, the ability to drive/operate a variety of vehicles, and the fact that one is never out of the action for long keeps me coming back for more. Also the capture - hold - recapture gameplay dynamic of the SP version of BF2 would normally become quite repetitive after an hour or so. I do prefer story driven single player (SP) games and have only rarely ventured into online multiplayer (MP) so BF2 would seem an awkward fit for me. I had previously reviewed both the JO and BF2 games and mods in November 2008 here on GameSpot but both needed to be revisited.īattlefield 2 (BF2) and its various official EA add-ons and third party mods makes for one great, highly replayable, modern era first person shooter (FPS). Most combat areas have hooks and rails from which to fly around the battlefield, jumping off at opportune moments to land into the opposition with brutal force. In its exploration of controversial subjects such as slavery, financial divide, and exploitation, Irrational Games ran the risk of crafting an offensive grab for ideas, but wisely pulls its punches until just the right moment to deliver a classy tale, if one that maybe doesn’t go as deep into its own talking points as it perhaps could.Īiding Booker in his adventure is the Skyhook, a handy invention that can be used in melee combat and allows players to hang from freight hooks or glide along rails like high-speed human trams.
